Course Description:
In this workshop you will perform basic surveying techniques using the hand level, rule (tape), and level rod. You will also learn to record field measurement notes and use the notes to make simple calculations. This workshop will benefit state and local officials, road department and construction employees, foremen, supervisors, and others who are interested in learning simple applied surveying methods. Experienced individuals are welcome to attend the course; however, the workshop is geared for those with limited or no surveying experience.

Speaker Bio:
Huley Shumpert has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of South Carolina and is a registered Professional Land Surveyor as well as a Professional Engineer. He was born and raised on a farm in Pelion, South Carolina with four sisters.

He worked as a Land Surveyor for a number of years before joining the Lexington County Public Works Department where he was a staff engineer and later became County Engineer.

Huley joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in 1986 working in Richland County as an Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer. He also worked in the district engineering office with SCDOT before moving to the state maintenance office in 1992. His final position with SCDOT was the State Maintenance Engineer and he retired from that position in 2007.

He lives in Pelion with his wife, Brenda, enjoying many hobbies such as working in the yard, raising goats, photography, and traveling.

He has two grown daughters and two grandchildren.

Who Should Attend:
Experienced individuals are welcome; however, the focus is toward those with limited or no surveying experience including engineers, supervisors, managers, state and local officials, road department personnel, and others who are interested in learning simple surveying methods.

Registration Fee:
The registration fee for the workshop is $125.00 per person. All South Carolina city, county, or state employees receive a LTAP scholarship registration fee of $35.00. The fee includes course materials, break refreshments, and the noon luncheon.

Advance registration is encouraged so that an accurate estimate of the number of workshop participants can be obtained. This is a hands-on workshop so space is limited. Only 36 slots available in this class!  Workshops with low advance registration will be subject to cancellation.

Payment Policy

UPDATED 2/15/23 – The Transportation Technology Transfer Service now accepts Electronic Check (ACH) payments in addition to credit card payments. While credit card payments are still the preferred payment method, you now have the Electronic Check (ACH) option. Your payment must be received within 5 business days of your registration. If your registration payment is not received by then, you will not be guaranteed registration for the conference.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your registration more than 72 hours before a class, your registration fee will be refunded, less a $35 processing fee. If you do not cancel before the 72 hour deadline your registration fee will not be refunded. You may send a substitute in your place, provided that you inform us of the substitute’s name no later than 24 hours before the training.  No-shows will not have their registration fee refunded.
