This course is for all employees working in trenching and excavation. OSHA requires the employer to have a “competent person” on-site who is trained and knowledgeable in soil analysis, protective systems, and the requirements of the standard. This one-day course meets OSHA 1926 Construction Standard for Trenching & Excavation “Competent Person” as required by OSHA for employers working in trenches. Class content covers all parts of Standard 1926.650-652 to include Soil Analysis, Protective Systems, Underground Utilities, Soil Piles, Safety Requirements, Checklists, and Access and Egress. Students completing this program will receive a pocket card certifying them as Trench “Competent Person”, student workbook and copy of the Trenching Standard.

Speaker Bio

Paul P. McCain, PE, is President of McCain Special Project Services, Inc., which offers a wide range of engineering consulting, management consulting, and expert witness services to the construction industry. In addition to his consulting practice, for the past 30+ years, Mr. McCain has delivered hundreds of adult continuing education events on a variety of programs related to construction management, engineering, safety and law, topics which he taught as a faculty member in the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department at NC State University for 111/2 years and in the private sector since January 2000. Paul was co-founder and served for many years as Construction Industry Program Chair for the Southeastern Education Center of the Federal OSHA Training Institute. He continues to teach train-the-trainer Federal OSHA classes for the Southeastern Education Center at the University of Tennessee for attendees seeking to become Federal OSHA Authorized Trainers in both the construction and general Industry regulations. His adult continuing education programs and other information technology transfer efforts have been recognized with awards at local, state, national and international levels. He is frequently requested to serve as a speaker or trainer because of his ability to communicate effectively and his lively, engaging and interactive presentation style.

Schedule

Class check-in will begin at 8:15am, with instruction beginning promptly at 8:30am and adjourning around 4pm. Lunch will be provided along with a morning and afternoon break.

Course Fee

The registration fee for the workshop is $225.00 per person. All South Carolina city, county, or state employees receive a LTAP scholarship registration fee of $125.00. The fee includes course materials, break refreshments, and lunch.

This course has a maximum of 15 students, and will be capped at this number. Advanced registration is encouraged so that an accurate estimate of the number of workshop participants can be obtained.  Workshops with low advanced registration will be subject to cancellation.

Who Should Attend

Anyone who performs or manages any type of excavation to install, repair or replace underground utilities including water and wastewater systems, gas, phone and electric utilities. Water and wastewater utility field personnel, safety program managers, utility inspectors, contractors, supervisors and managers will benefit from this course.

Payment Policy

UPDATED 2/15/23 – The Transportation Technology Transfer Service now accepts Electronic Check (ACH) payments in addition to credit card payments. While credit card payments are still the preferred payment method, you now have the Electronic Check (ACH) option. Your payment must be received within 5 business days of your registration. If your registration payment is not received by then, you will not be guaranteed registration for the conference.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your registration more than 72 hours before a class, your registration fee will be refunded, less a $35 processing fee. If you do not cancel before the 72 hour deadline your registration fee will not be refunded. You may send a substitute in your place, provided that you inform us of the substitute’s name no later than 24 hours before the training.  No-shows will not have their registration fee refunded.
